Two Vagabonds: Dewing Woodward, Louise Johnson, and the Founding of the First Art School in Provincetown
Tuesday, September 11
In the summer of 1896, Dewing Woodward and her companion, Louise Johnson, took the train from New York to Provincetown and established the Cape Cod School of Drawing and Painting, now recognized as the first art school in Provincetown.
Woodward’s career spanned decades and continents. She practiced and taught not only in Provincetown, but Pennsylvania, New York City, Paris, Arles, the Netherlands, Woodstock, NY, and Coral Gables, FL.
Mary Sieminski, a frequent Provincetown visitor and resident of Woodward’s and Johnson’s hometown of Williamsport, PA, is co-author of “Pioneer of Provincetown: Dewing Woodward and the Cape Cod School of Drawing and Painting” by Mary Sieminski and Melissa Renn. (Provincetown Arts 2018/2019)
