Free Movie Nights: Alfred Hitchcock’s Scariest Films, hosted by Marc Strauss
Wednesdays in October
5:30 pm
The Provincetown Public Library welcomes the community to participate in the Alfred Hitchcock’s Scariest Films Series screened at the Provincetown Public Library during the month of October. This line-up of films has been curated and will be hosted by Marc Strauss, Professor Emeritus, Holland School of Visual Performing Arts, Southeast Missouri State University. Each program will include a short introduction and a brief discussion after the film. The films start at 5:30 pm and will be shown in the following order:
1. October 3: Shadow of a Doubt (1943; 1 hour, 48 minutes)—Starring Joseph Cotten at his most despicable, a young and charming Teresa Wright figures out almost too late his murderous secret. Hitch’s favorite among his own films, the director brought danger back to where it should occur—in the home.
2. October 10: Rear Window (1954; 1 hour, 52 minutes)—A wheelchair-bound James Stewart, true love Grace Kelly, and masseuse Thelma Ritter aren’t quite sure until almost too late if their neighbor across the courtyard (a pre-Perry Mason Raymond Burr) is a murderer.
3. October 17: Psycho (1960; 1 hour, 44 minutes)—Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) takes care of his “mother” in a creaky old Victorian house as bodies begin to pile up. The prototype for horror films, Hitchcock wouldn’t allow people to come into the theater after it started.
4. October 24: The Birds (1963; 1 hour, 49 minutes)—Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, and mankind’s feathered “friends” star in this environmental apocalyptic warning.
5. October 31: Frenzy (1972; 1 hour, 56 minutes)—Hitchcock’s penultimate film recounts the story of a serial killer who hides in plain daylight. A very black comedy AND gruesome character study penned by Anthony Shaffer (Sleuth).
