Free Movie Nights: Doris Day-athon
Wednesdays in March
5:30 pm
The Provincetown Public Library welcomes the community to participate in the March Doris Day-athon film series screened at the Provincetown Public Library on each Wednesday of the month. This line-up of films will feature notable Doris Day titles from the classical Hollywood film era. These films range from western musical comedy (Calamity Jane) to scary thriller (Midnight Lace), to romantic comedy (Pillow Talk) to identity farce (Romance on the High Seas).

Doris Day (born 1922 and still kicking) was a big band singer whose first movie was the aforementioned Romance on the High Seas.  From 1948 to 1968 she starred in 39 films. During her career she received 6 Golden Globe awards, an Academy Award nomination (for our movie Pillow Talk), Lifetime Grammy Award, and was named Top Female Movie Star 10 times.

Patrons are encouraged to bring their own snacks and refreshments. The films start at 5:30 pm and will be shown in the following order:

March 6: Calamity Jane (1953; 1 hour, 43 minutes): A musical comedy about what may or may not have been Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok’s relationship is filled with singing, dancing, romancing, and just plain all-around fun. Return with us now to  the Golden Days of Yesteryear…1953, when men were strong, women were pretty, and racial and gender stereotypes reigned supreme. Will Calamity give up her buckskins for gingham? Will Wild Bill see her for the sweet gal she really is?  Suspend disbelief and saddle up for a high-energy ride.

March 13: Midnight Lace (1960; 1 hour, 48 minutes): In London, why does newlywed Kit Preston think someone is trying to kill her? Why doesn’t her veddy British husband believe her? And who is the handsome American who may or may not be involved? Lots of suspense. Lots of Rex Harrison. Lots of John Gavin.

March 20: Pillow Talk (1959; 1 hour, 51 minutes): How does a nice girl react to party line shenanigans of a randy bachelor who keeps her phone tied up for hours with his amorous pursuits? And what happens when said randy bachelor discovers who she is and pretends to be a shy fellow who needs a woman’s gentle touch? Doris Day and Rock Hudson at their comedic best.

March 27: Romance on the High Seas (1948; 1 hour, 39 minutes): Hijinks and mistaken/hidden identities in this bit of fluff which was Doris’ film debut as a singer who has a once in a lifetime chance to shine.  Co-starring the fabulous Janis Paige, Jack Carson, and Don DeFore (wonderful character actors you’ve probably never heard of), this is delightful.
