Free Movie Nights: “Rock On”
Wednesdays in December
5:30 pm
The Provincetown Public Library welcomes the community to participate in the “Rock On” Movie Series screened at the Provincetown Public Library during the month of December. This line-up of films, featuring “rocks” in one form or another, has been curated by our very own Board of Library Trustee and film aficionado, Stephen Borkowski! Patrons are encouraged to bring their own snacks and refreshments. The films start at 5:30 pm and will be shown in the following order:

December 5: The Rock (1996; 2 hours, 16 minutes): A retired US Marine general (Ed Harris) seizes a stockpile of chemical weapons and takes over Alcatraz with 81 tourists as hostages. His demand: restitution to families of soldiers who died in covert operations. A Navy SEAL team with support from an FBI chemical warfare expert (Nicolas Cage) and a former Alcatraz escapee (Sean Connery) assemble to penetrate the terrorists’ defenses on the island and neutralize the threat before time runs out.

December 12: Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter (1957; 1 hour, 32 minutes): Adman Rockwell P. Hunter must come up with a new idea to propel him one more rung up the corporate ladder in this satire on Madison Avenue, television and the cult of the movie star

December 19: Scorpion King with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (2002; 1 hour, 32 minutes): Mighty Memnon rules over nearly all the known world, who defeats his enemies in battle with the help of a beautiful sorceress. “Free tribes” form a fragile alliance to fight Memnon, and hire a trio of assassins to kill the sorceress and thus remove Memnon’s advantage. The assassins are betrayed by the son of one of the tribal leaders, and Mathayus finds himself unable to kill Cassandra. Mathayus abducts the sorceress, who explains that Memnon was holding her against her will. Mathayus then uses his newfound sense of justice to convince the surviving tribal leaders to join forces again to defeat Memnon.

December 26: Magnificent Obsession with Rock Hudson (1954; 1 hour, 48 minutes): Reckless playboy Bob Merrick crashes his speedboat, requiring emergency attention from a rescue team. They have to use the town’s only resuscitator. At that same moment the beloved, local doctor has a heart attack and dies while waiting for the life-saving device. When Bob learns about the doctor’s secret – to give selflessly and in secret – he decides to give it a try. He alienates the doctor’s widow, Helen, with whom Bob has now fallen in love. His persistence causes another tragedy, and he must remake his life.
