Heritage Day: Admiral Donald MacMillan’s Arctic Voyages Brought to Life
Thursday, June 13
6:00 pm
The Provincetown Public Library will celebrate our community’s rich history on the evening of Thursday, June 13 with the 2019 Heritage Day Celebration. This year, Captain Sean Meagher, using his personal, modern footage from his own voyages in the Arctic, will bring MacMillan’s historical trips from Provincetown to the Arctic to life.

A Provincetown native and local hero, Admiral Donald MacMillan made more than 30 expeditions to the Arctic, including a famed trip to the North Pole with Admiral Robert Perry. MacMillan is celebrated in Provincetown and throughout the world as a powerful explorer, scholar, and researcher whose Provincetown-born wanderlust and maritime community ties helped propel him to greatness.

Captain Sean P. Meager as born and raised on Cape Cod and has a special love for Provincetown and the ocean. At age 8, Sean was given his first sail boat, a Laser, which was soon followed by a 13-foot Boston Whaler at age 12. By 18. he earned his first Captains ticket and became the youngest Captain ever at Hyline Cruises.
From the ice fields of Northwest Passage and North pole to the volcanoes and jungles of the South Pacific and South East Asia, Captain Meagher has piloted some of the world’s finest sail and power vessels in the most remote areas on the planet.

On the MY Latitude, Captain Meagher undertook 3 historic journeys. In 2014, he led an expedition through the Northwest passage (east to west). In 2015, Captain Meagher led a second expedition through the passage this time west to east was the 9th boat in history to ever do so. A glutton for punishment, in 2016 Captain Meagher circumnavigated Svalbard, an archipelago north of Norway, and within 400 miles of the North pole.
A life long conservationist, Captain Meagher has noticed a disturbing trend in the amount of plastics in the Oceans. Ever proactive, he has allied himself with organizations such as The Ocean Voyages Institute and has spoken internationally on the subject of plastics in the Ocean and what to do with them.

The Provincetown Public Library 2019 Heritage Day Celebration is a free event open to all visitors and community members.  The program begins at 6:00 pm on Thursday, June 13th.
