Independence House Installation: The Clothesline Project and Silent Witness
July 15 @ 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Independence House’s installations, The Clothesline Project and The Silent Witness National Initiative will be on display at the Provincetown Public Library from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on Monday, July 15. These installations seek to bring awareness to those whose lives have been impacted by domestic and sexual violence.
Independence House is a community-based organization on Cape Cod that provides free and confidential specialized services and widespread programs for community members who are survivors or, or impacted by domestic and sexual violence. Independence House has been sharing knowledge and skills with survivors in order for them to regain self-confidence, make informed decisions and initiate changes in their lives in order to live empowered, independently, and free from violence. Independence House has been a consistent and continuous leader in increasing safety options for adult and children survivors of domestic and sexual violence; increasing knowledge and awareness about domestic and sexual violence prevention; elevating and improving Cape Cod’s response to domestic and sexual violence; and actively engaging with the community to end domestic and sexual violence.
The Clothesline Project, created by survivors of sexual violence, began on Cape Cod in 1990 to address the issue of violence against women. The shirts that make up the project serve as a visible testimony to this issue.
The Silent Witness silhouettes were first created in 1990 by women artists and writers in Minnesota who wanted to bring attention to the 26 lives that were lost to domestic violence that year.
