Raptors Are The Solution: Eliminating Rat Poisons In Our Environment
September 19 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Join Gary Menin of MASS-RATS, the Massachusetts state chapter of the Berkeley-based Raptors Are the Solution, at the Provincetown Public Library on Thursday, September 19 for a discussion , hosted by the Provincetown Board of Health, on the environmental effects of rat poisons and the dangers they pose to various raptor populations.
Raptors Are The Solution is a Project of the Earth Island Institute and is dedicated to raising awareness of the impact of rodenticides on our environment with the ultimate goal of banning them as a tool to control rodents towards at least keeping our raptors as far as possible from the species extinction crisis currently plaguing our planet.
Gary Menin is an engineer by training and experience. He began his career working on the power plants that provide electricity, power ships, and run factories. But as his career progressed, he began to focus on how to run these devices without harming the health and safety of people or of the environment. Working for General Electric, he trained people in 16 states and 4 countries in environmental, health, and safety management. Gary then took this teaching ability into the high school classroom, teaching physics to the next generation of problem-solvers. And although he’s now retired, he’s still teaching, training, and working to protect the environment with the Raptors Are The Solution non-profit.
“If you haven’t heard, an engineer doesn’t see a glass of water as half full or half empty – they see a glass that’s not built to the proper specifications.” Engineers identify problems and come up with reasonable solutions. Gary and others have noticed that attempts to solve one problem – too many rats and mice – have led to bigger problems – releasing poisons into the food chain. Gary is willing to travel the New England states and beyond to raise awareness of this unconscionable and ongoing problem and propose effective – non-toxic solutions.
