Sailor’s Valentines: A Unique Maritime Artform
Exhibit: April 5 – May 4
Reception and Lecture: Tuesday, April 24th, 5:00 pm
In honor of the upcoming Moby-Dick Marathon Reading, the Provincetown Public Library will host an exhibit of Sailor’s Valentines created by nationally recognized, award-winning maritime artist Gregg Roberts from Thursday, April 5 to Friday, May 4 on the Library’s Main Level.
On Tuesday, April 24th, join the artist in the Marc Jacobs Reading Room for a reception at 5:00 pm, to be followed by a lecture at 7:00 pm. Gregg will present examples of his latest shellcraft creations constructed of common shells and sailor’s knots transformed into dazzling geometric forms. These unique shellcraft art forms have endured throughout the years as tokens of love and affection and Gregg will discuss these historical origins as romantic mementos meant for sweethearts left behind as sailors went out on whale hunting expeditions. Finally, Gregg will review contemporary Sailor’s Valentines current design trends.
