Writer’s Voice Cafe
Wednesday, May 8
6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
This month, the Provincetown Public Library continues its collaborative effort with the renowned Writers Voice Café. Continuing to further its mission of becoming a center for cultural storytelling in our community, the Library is working with the founding members of the Writer’s Voice Café to produce a series of monthly Cafés, Writing Workshops and Annual Events in 2019. Founded and hosted by Dian Hamilton in 2007, with Hilde Oleson and Lorraine Kujawa joining shortly thereafter, the Writer’s Voice Café provides writers and artists of all genres opportunities to share their work and to connect with others in the community for support and inspiration.
The May Writer’s Voice Cafe will feature filmmaker Rebecca M. Alvin. In 2010, Alvin set out to create a portrait of eccentric Brewster resident Joe Connolly. Now, 9 years later, the film is just about finished. Titled The Isolato, the film is a slice of Joel’s life living off the grid by his own rules, eating roadkill, and sharing his love of the sea and his philosophy of life. During the Cafe, Alvin will show some clips from her documentary and discuss the process of filming Connolly in what turned out to be the last years of his life.
Rebecca M. Alvin has been making films for over 25 years, including the documentaries Women of Faith and Out of Service. She has also been Editor of Provincetown Magazine since 2008. In addition, Alvin has also spent the past 18 years writing about the arts for various other publications, including Cineaste, The Journal of Film and Video, Film & History, The Cape Codder, Cape Cod Magazine, and Moviemaker. She is Associate Teaching Professor of Film and Media studies for The New School in New York City, and lives year-round in Brewster.
The May Writer’s Voice Café event at the Provincetown Public Library will be held in the Marc Jacobs Reading Room on Wednesday, May 8 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Open Mic begins the evening. Coffee, tea, and snacks will be served. Everyone is welcome! Free will donation. Wheelchair accessible.
