Writer’s Voice Cafe with Poet Hilde Oleson
August 14 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
This month, the Provincetown Public Library continues its collaborative effort with the renowned Writers Voice Café. Continuing to further its mission of becoming a center for cultural storytelling in our community, the Library is working with the founding members of the Writer’s Voice Café to produce a series of monthly Cafés, Writing Workshops and Annual Events in 2019. Founded and hosted by Dian Hamilton in 2007, with Hilde Oleson and Lorraine Kujawa joining shortly thereafter, the Writer’s Voice Café provides writers and artists of all genres opportunities to share their work and to connect with others in the community for support and inspiration.
The August Writer’s Voice Cafe will feature poet Hilde Oleson, who will read from her new work about the historic epidemic of smallpox in Provincetown in the 1840s.
From a pretend husband at age three to falling in love in old age, Hilde Oleson lives on dreams. The daughter of a minister in little Vermont towns, she lived a quiet life. After graduating from Boston University she worked in city slums as a social worker and teacher in underprivileged schools.
Hilde Oleson says she came to Provincetown in 2006 to die. She moved to the ocean on Cape Cod after the death of her long-time husband. From that grief emerged a new life as a poet. Comforted by the ocean and inspired by the seagulls, she too began to fly. Two years later at age 85, she began writing poetry.
She has had five books of poetry published and two more are in progress. Among them are Dreams Reward, Love in the Nursing Home, Coffee at Hilde’s, Why? and Why Not?
The Writer’s Voice Cafe as a part of The Writer’s Voice supports, inspires and celebrates writers of artistic works of all genres on Cape Cod with a leaning toward the Outer Cape. We work in partnership with the Provincetown Public Library.
The August Writer’s Voice Café event at the Provincetown Public Library will be held in the Marc Jacobs Reading Room on Wednesday, August 14 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The evening will begin with an open mic. Coffee, tea, and snacks will be served. Everyone and all ages are welcome! Free will donation. Wheelchair accessible.
