Come the Dawn: Reflections at Omaha Beach
A Poem by Mark S. Peel

To the few, memories of the past
occur at the moment
that may be their last.
Come the dawn.
Blind denial and tension define
the time remaining
to contemplate and resign.
Come the dawn.
And fate turns from the past
when personal fortune
is about to be cast.
Come the dawn.
All conflict has a start
owing to a pause
incurred by the heart.
Come the dawn.
The courage of those affected
is found in fearful mien,
some of choice, some selected.
Come the dawn.
Then came the dawn.
