Strolling Unicorn
A Poem by Katharyn Howd Machan

takes their sweet time along Commercial
pretending that if they wanted to fly
they could turn themselves into a seabird and soar
over The Mews and Café Heaven
and maybe land on the roof of the Pointe
to stare down at early diners. Strolling
Unicorn thinks about buying a shirt
with John Waters’ face or a crimson-clawed lobster
or even a whale that seems to be smiling
as it spouts out a song of July. Alone
for now they know they’ll visit
art galleries, shops, maybe sit with a view
under blue and white stripes at Pepe’s Wharf
for oysters from Wellfleet, Truro white wine
before dj music solid gold as their horn
at the Boatslip’s hot tea dance where they once met Divine.
