People Connected by Place
A Poem by Mark S. Peel

Little-known and, perhaps, not much remembered
until a source like the New York Times reports it
are the coincidences of life’s journey
that connect, even superficially,
people by where they live.
Author Arthur Miller, Manhattan born, Brooklyn raised
attended Abraham Lincoln High.
Some years later so did Joseph Heller and Neil Diamond.
When Miller married and settled into a rent in Brooklyn Heights,
it was around the corner from W. H. Auden.
Later he moved to a duplex owned by Norman Mailer’s parents.
The time would come when he would buy
a four-story brownstone on Grace Court
which he subsequently sold to W.E.B. Dubois
after he moved to 155 Willow Street
near where Truman Capote would one day live.
By the time he married Marilyn Monroe
he was living far away in Roxbury, Connecticut,
just up the road from me.
