It’s All About Love
A New Poem by Hilde Oleson

So Valentine’s Day is over.
He did not show up with a ring.
The flowers are wilting.
The chocolates are mostly eaten, and the tears have mostly dried.
But the darn love will not go away.
You still wake every morning thinking of him.
You still spend half the day
Waiting for the phone to ring.
But the other half —
Well, the sound of his voice on the phone
Brings a thrill to your heart.
The fact that he cares that you are ok–
That is the most important news of your day.
That his voice speaking love takes your worries away
Is a bonus that others don’t have.
The prospect of moments together,
The knowledge that someone else
Shares your values, cares about the same issues,
Works to strengthen the same world–
Those are what makes life important.
Knowing that that call will come again tomorrow.
Knowing the touch of their hand will impel you,
Knowing you are not alone in the world
Those are the things that keep us going.
Love is the power that powers our hearts.
Love is the power that fills up the mind.
Love gives the body a thrill the best food never did.
Calculus, philosophy. Medicine, drugs–
None of them raise us so high.
It is all about love.
