May 17, 2004: The State Supreme Judicial Court’s Goodridge decision allowing same sex couples to marry in the state of Massachusetts became effective on May 17, 2004. On this day, a spontaneous gathering of spectators and well wishers formed in front of Town Hall – ultimately growing to over 1,000 people who stayed throughout the day to cheer and celebrate the 154 couples who filed their marriage intentions on that day – all of whom were same sex couples.
