Beginning Tuesday, January 5 and continuing every Tuesday until the book is finished. Join at any time!

Mrs. Jack explores the life of the extraordinary, red-headed Isabella Stewart Gardner (1840-1924), whose life spanned pre-Civil War nineteenth century America through the early twentieth century.  Gardner was an American charmer and art collector who came to Beacon Street, Boston from New York and became a legend in her lifetime.

After years of collecting art on a small, personal scale, Isabella inherited $1.75 million upon her father’s death in 1891 and was able to begin collecting on a greatly expanded level. Upon purchasing Rembrandt’s Self-Portrait, Age 23 in 1896, Isabella and her husband Jack decided their ambitions as collectors required more space than their residence permitted, and first began to consider the idea of a museum.  This dream was realized when, at her husband’s death, she built an enduring memorial–the Gardner museum or Fenway Court.
