"I became aware that our love was doomed; love had turned into a love affair with a beginning and an end. I could name the very moment when it had begun, and one day I knew I should be able to name the final hour." --Graham Greene
The Provincetown Public Library welcomes the community to participate in its free movie Wednesdays! February is a month that celebrates love, but as we all know too well love doesn't always last. In some cases it can die, in others it can fade away. But some love affairs are never meant to be, and here at the library this month we're presenting four films that explore that theme. In "Brief Encounter" a chance meeting at a railway station sparks a passionate extramarital affair. Cited by many critics as one of the greatest films of all time, "Brief Encounter" was ranked by the British Film Institute as the second-greatest British film of all time. Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford are star- and class-crossed lovers who meet in college in "The Way We Were." In "Once" Dublin is the background for two musicians who meet and fall in love, while Los Angeles provides the backdrop for an actor and musician who are pulled apart while following their dreams.
This line-up of films has been carefully selected by Deb Karacozian, Library staff member and film aficionado. The films start at 5:30 pm and will be shown in the following order:
February 2: La La Land (2016; 2 hours, 8 minutes): While navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.
February 9: The Way We Were (1973; 1 hours, 58 minutes): In pre-WWII, McCarthyism, a diametrically opposed couple come together only to find out that genuine friendship and physical attraction is not enough to overcome fundamental societal beliefs.
February 16: Once(2007; 1 hour, 26 minutes): A modern-day musical about a busker and an immigrant and their eventful week in Dublin, as they write, rehearse and record songs that tell their love story.
February 23: Brief Encounter(1945; 1 hours, 26 minutes): Meeting a stranger in a railway station, a woman is tempted to cheat on her husband.
